I had the wonderful privilege of speaking to James “Jim” Mohr about his recent services from Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County. After several weeks, Jim is back to feeling like himself, “Although every time I think I’m getting better, something else happens,” he said with a reserved chuckle.
Jim has been retired for the last 23 years. He lives alone in the small town of Woodbine. He began his story by telling me, “It all started when I was coming home from the grocery store one Sunday morning; driving on old Highway 77 from Junction City to Woodbine and I blacked out 3 times in about a mile.” The last time he came to, he was headed straight for dirt pile, but managed to miss it thanks to his neighbor who was traveling with him. They were able to make it back to Woodbine safely, but it was after this day that Jim decided to quit driving. It has been about a year and a half since Jim got behind the wheel of a vehicle, and although he quit driving, his small bouts of blacking out did not stop happening. “It’s just the way my blood flows now, I lose balance sometimes, that’s just the way it is.”
In July of this year, Jim blacked out briefly enough that it ended with a fall off his porch, which resulted in a broken wrist. Home Health & Hospice of Dickinson County (HH&H) provided services to Jim during his healing process. “Everyone at home health are good people. CeCe and Tristyn especially helped me a lot. We went through a lot of changes, hospital visits, and made other improvements over the last few weeks. They helped me with baths and exercising, and sometimes they just came to check on me,” he explained. “We did it all with good humor and laughter.”
Jim was able to successfully graduate from the home health program. Without the services provided by HH&H, healing would have been very difficult. While he has good neighbors and friends to check in on him, he appreciates that there is a dedicated program that he can call upon to help.
